If there is moisture from behind the wall, it should be dealt with immediately. If you can reach the pipes and valves on the other side of the wall and the tiled wall itself is not damaged, then it may be possible to repair the leak from the backside. If because of the moisture on the wall from behind, the tiles have come loose, then the whole wall need to be broken down and repaired. Wet studs need to be dried before processing. This will definitely require new tiles.
When the leak is finally located and the plumber determines what needs to be replaced, either the valve or the pipe itself, removal can be hampered by the age of the valve and the length of time it has been leaking. Rust and other debris can make it difficult to hold on to, and the conditions have a way of adhering together that is difficult to loosen. Professional plumbers can loosen pipes easily.
If you have standing water around the base of the exterior of your tub or shower, then water is getting through the wall, under the entire fixture and running out. What can cause this condition is a crack around the drain or in the bottom of the tub or shower. A shower pan cannot easily be replaced. You need to break out additional tiles in order to remove the tub or shower bottom.
It isn’t often the repair that makes a plumbing leak complex. Repair is actually the easy part. What Is difficult is exposing the leaking area and removing the materials for repair. It is very easy to damage more property than necessary during discovery and removal. Then more parts and labor are involved replacing the original parts.
